The Mountain Trail

Level 1 · Lesson 1.5

On-air manners

Jimmy Bob, a friendly cartoon mountain man in a trucker cap and overalls

“Listen twice as much as you talk. Mamaw taught me that, and she was right on the radio too.”

You'll be able to

join a frequency politely, use procedural words, use common Q-signals.

Always listen before transmitting, then ask "Is this frequency in use?" To join a conversation, say your call sign in a pause; "" is reserved for urgent traffic. "" means your turn and "" means you are done, and real hams never say "over and out". Q-signals are three-letter shortcuts: is location, is "I confirm", is interference, is changing frequency. "" means best regards.
